From AI algorithm to clinical asset: de-risking Histofy’s first physical launch

Leading the design process from initial idea to a commercially viable unit for first commercial launch, minimising risk at every stage and keeping the product focused on its end application and users.

The challenge

Histofy builds transparent AI for computational pathology, rigorously validated and practical to deploy.

Its tools, like MitPro® and GI-Miner, help pathologists and scientists make faster, more accurate, insight-driven decisions for improved patient care and safe drug development. Using AI to improve laboratory workflow required a new device. Achieving seamless integration into the complex high-throughput microtomy workstation called for hardware-specific experience.

Histofy wanted a partner who could work as an extension of their own team, bringing that hardware experience to turn their vision into a commercial reality.

The goal was to define a viable roadmap to a commercially viable unit for lab trials, suitable for initial small-scale batch production.

The result:a commercially viable design, ready for deployment

The outcome

An initial concept translated into a commercially viable design, ready to be deployed with trial partners.
Physical design signed off, and 10 pre-production units ordered and delivered to Histofy, for testing ahead of CE certification.
A vetted, repeatable supplier network and hardware development roadmap Histofy can reuse as it scales.
Histofy’s AI image analysis platform is on track to move from software into the lab as a physical product.

It’s been a pleasure working with Matt and the People Planet Product team on this project. Fantastic design concept and excellent advice on product development. Quite simply we would never have got this project off the ground without him and we look forward to working with him again in the future.

How we got there

PPP worked as Histofy’s hardware lead and an extension of their team, owning development strategy and project management from first concept to pre-production units.

STEP 01

Defining the initial design

An initial schematic translated into a believable concept, with user needs and commercial strategy captured in a documented product specification, giving the technical teams a shared reference to work from.

01
Early concept annotations on a tablet showing front and side views of the deviceEarly concept development
STEP 02

Early marketing assets

Photorealistic renders and animation that let the team share the vision with potential adopters and stakeholders, building commitment ahead of significant technical development.

STEP 03

Proof of concept development and testing

Initial prototypes built to test the core product functionality and prove the viability of the key components.

STEP 04

Bringing the right partners on board

The team connected with expert partners across manufacturing, electronics and compliance, for a smooth transition from development to deployment.

STEP 05

Design iteration and pre-production units

Flexible support to rapidly iterate the design based on user feedback, keeping development moving at Histofy’s pace. The refined design was then taken through to an initial run of pre-production units with manufacturing partners, ready for final testing and regulatory submission and paving the way for commercial use.
